A Lesson on Taking (Big) Risks: Heidi Nazarudin’s Founding Journey

Heidi Nazarudin’s journey began with numbers. Fresh out of college, she jumped right onto an investment banking program for exemplary Malaysian graduates in Tokyo. After all, she graduated with a degree in Computer Science. She then became the CEO of a Nasdaq-listed tech company.

Years later, Heidi found her thoughts wandering from company valuations to street-style catwalks. Tokyo was brimming with people gifted in style walking the streets daily, and she was beyond inspired. Needless to say, Heidi found herself becoming more and more interested in a whole different industry, and she knew she had to do something about it.

Eventually, she made the decision to pursue her passion in fashion and flew to Los Angeles to write about it, leaving her steady, high-paying finance job with a more unpredictable but life-fuelling passion project.

That was not to say the road was easy for her. Heidi’s writing career didn’t start out great. After figuring out what skills she needed to work on, she dedicated one year to night classes and found freelance jobs in fashion and beauty copywriting. Her unique background in business merged with her keen eye for fashion gave birth to The Ambitionista, a blog dedicated to inspiring boss ladies all over the world.

She went on to build a following on Twitter, thinking it was the ideal platform for a budding writer. However, her reach truly expanded when Heidi started her own Instagram account where she has over 476,000 followers.

This has led to many exciting opportunities for Heidi, including collaborations and ambassadorship roles with Uber, American Express, and SK-II. Through her brand, she also landed countless media features and magazine covers, including but not limited to Marie Claire Malaysia and WWORLD Asia Malaysia.

After some time, she started receiving messages from her followers (who are often businesswomen) asking for help in developing their own social media presence. Despite the initial hesitation, Heidi changed her mind when she saw a report generated by a paid consultancy for a friend of hers, figuring that she could do much better. Heidi then founded Marque Media, an end-to-end digital communication and brand strategy agency that handles more than 50 clients, the majority of which are on retainer.

In 2019, Heidi was honored as a Malaysian International Star Awardee by the Malaysian government for her incredible work in multiple fields outside of Malaysia.

Today, Heidi is a trusted brand strategist, digital influencer, and public speaker. Between personally crafting captions for her Instagram and blog posts for The Ambitionista, and managing her company Marque Media, she also loves empowering women through speaking engagements at conferences including Lean In, BlogHer and TEC Summit and via leadership roles on the board of Ellevate Los Angeles and TogetHER LA.

What started as sharing little posts on a social platform turned out to be a purposeful way where she could help shape other people’s brands across the globe. Heidi also supports her team with flexible job opportunities and creative training, advancing into a modern work culture where digitally savvy creatives and managers can thrive.
